When Phil & Margo met, he told her about a piece of coachwood, a 1960’s NZ Pelin Challenger 36’ boat plan and a boyhood dream to build it. ‘Why don’t you?” she said.  So, in 2001 at age 50yrs, Phil’s weekend boat building project began when the coachwood became the future helm of ‘MV Mutual Attraction’.

Oregon roof trusses from a demolition become the laminated frames and stringers for the triple diagonal ply (now 39’) hull.  There are no ‘hard’ corners on this boat, every edge has a radius every join has an epoxy fillet and every wood fibre is layered with bote-cote clear.

Laminated construction of the keel; Fibreglass sheathing and undercoating of the hull; Construction of the saloon and cockpit floors and hatches all done whilst the hull was still upturned meant longer weather protection, and the odd afternoon nap in a hammock under the ‘cubby’.
